house has set out its course here. i think you'll see something a lot different in the fiscal cliff negotiations from the white house than you saw in say the government shut down negotiations a year ago. you are going to see a much more campaigning, much more campaign-like president obama in the next month. jon: you know, some sort of even partial -- neutral observers are saying that the obama campaign won in part because they did a much better job of harnessing the power of social media in this election and driving their voters to the polls. if that succeeded for them in the election, can they do it when it comes to governing? can they make the country, you know, embrace tax increases, for instance. >> yeah it's a huge question. i think there are folks who think that it can work the same way. there are a lot of others who really question whether or not those sorts of tactics, and, you know, the list and voter contacts that ofa built in a campaign context, do they work on capitol hill and governing. there are some doubts there but i don't think there is any doubt that the white hous

the fiscal cliff a lot of investment houses are lowering their growth outlook. that is because the owners of small businesses, they are the drivers of the economy. they hire. right now, one out of five cut jobs in the next 12 months. one out of three is cutting capital spending. if there is no jobs we don't have consumer spending that is 70% of g.d.p., so this is really steam rolling. it is frightening. >> gregg: i was reading economists and they say household purchases, wages in salary going down, durable goods decreasing now we have manufacturing coming out on monday as well as jobs report on thursday or friday? >> yeah, the jobs report is expected to be very dismal, about 75,000 net jobs. some of that is because of sandy, but housing market is rebuilding, it's recovering. that makes people feel more wealthy. this retail season is going to be very critical. it's going to tell us a lot. stocks could go up on that. we have some tail winds but right now there is a lot of question marks. >> gregg: brenda, we'll talk about sandy and impact on the economy in the next hour. you can catch brend

more than a month away from right now we face this fiscal cliff, maybe mitt romney, who had a lot of great ideas, and in fact, some of the pros coming out of the white house sound a lot of what mitt romney has said in the past. maybe they'll talk about that. it's interesting, yesterday the president did appear before some small business leaders and essentially this is what he's suggesting to congress: accept tax hikes right now and we will work on a bigger deal later. so let's do the tax hikes right now and do the deal later. what do you think about that? here is the president. >> families and small businesses would therefore be able to enjoy some peace of mind heading into christmas and heading into the new year. and it would give us more time then next year to work together on a comprehensive plan to bring down our deficits, streamline our tax system, to do it in a balanced way. including asking the wealthiest americans to pay a little more so that we can still invest in things like education and training and science and research. >> brian: so he is still politicking. and he is
